Hildagarde Brooks

Hildagarde “Hildi” Brooks, 85, of Marshalltown, passed away on Monday, December 23, 2019 at Unity Point Health - Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Memorial services for Hildagarde will be held on Monday, December 30, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Hildi and her family. Hildagarde Rose Spielbauer Brooks was born on September 4, 1934 in Guttenberg, Iowa to George and Frances Rohner Spielbauer. Hildi graduated from Guttenberg High School in 1952. On April 5, 1958, Hildi was united in marriage to MC “Dick” Brooks in Iowa City. She worked for Wolfe Clinic as a secretary and Franklin Elementary in the dietary department. Hildi was known by her most kind and gentle spirit and thought of as a “second mom” by many. Hildi was exceptional in making crafts as well as crocheting and knitting and won numerous awards at the All Iowa Fair in Cedar Rapids. She even authored her own book, “Living Arrows”, which was about growing up in a Catholic family during The Great Depression. Hildi is survived by her husband, MC “Dick” Brooks and their children: Tanya (Tim) Hillygus of Marshalltown and Trent (fiancée Shelley) Brooks of Marshalltown. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Travis (Kim) Brooks, Staci (fiancé Justin) Hillygus, and Hunter Hillygus; great grandchildren: Kayleigh and Landon, and siblings: Frank, Thomas, James, and Cecelia, and many nieces and nephews. Hildi is preceded in death by her son, Todd Brooks; niece Jill Hansen; parents, George and Frances, and her siblings: Mary, Kathleen, Joseph, Rosalyn, Arnold, Helen, Larry, John, Daniel, and David.
