Howard Knight, 93, of Marshalltown, died Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services for Howard will be held at 10:30 a.m, Saturday, January 19, 2013, at the Green Mountain United Church of Christ. Burial with military honors provided by the Harry C. Harter VFW Post #839 and the American Legion Frank Lewis Glick Post #46 will follow services at the Green Mountain Cemetery. Visitation for Howard will be held from 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 18, 2013, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home (1209 Iowa Avenue West, Marshalltown, Iowa 50158) where his family will be present to greet friends. Memorial contributions may be directed in Howards name to his family. Howard was born January 9, 1920, in Gladbrook, Iowa, the son of Sherman Arthur and Dora (Klinger) Knight. He was raised and educated in the Gladbrook community and attended the Gladbrook School System through the tenth grade. Howard spent his junior and senior years at Waterloo West High School. Following graduation Howard honorably served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Army Air Corps from September of 1941 through August of 1945. Howard was united in marriage to Iris (Joyce) Buenzow on May 2, 1948, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He was later married to Rosalind (Stanley) Dittmer at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Marshalltown. They made their home in Green Mountain until moving to Marshalltown ten years ago. Howard spent his working career operating the printing presses having served the communities of Des Moines, Waterloo and Marshalltown. Howard retired from Marshall Print in Marshalltown, Iowa, in 1981.Howard enjoyed golfing, bowling, slow-pitch softball, water skiing, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and flying planes. Howard liked to collect beer steins, especially the Anheuser Busch and Budweiser steins. He was an active member of the Marshalltown Harry C. Harter VFW Post # 839, the Green Mountain United Church of Christ and the Green Mountain Lions Club. He was a past member of the American Legion in Waterloo, Iowa, and was a strong supporter of the local printers union.Howard is survived by his loving wife, Rosalind Knight of Marshalltown, his children: Debra (Robert) Miller and Greg (Ruby Nichols) Knight, both of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, his step-children: Kathleen (Raymond) Airey of Marshalltown and Roger (Rosemary) Dittmer of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, his grandchildren: John Paul Miller, Jason E. (Kris) Miller, Amber Marie (Sean) Patchett, his step-grandchildren: Andrew (Rachel) Dittmer, Laura (Michael) Wallace, Adam (Laurie) Dittmer, Lisa (Eric) Schmidt and Michelle (Mark) Wagner, one great-grandson and eight step-grandchildren.Howard was preceded in death by his first wife Iris, his parents, his brother Harold and three children in their infancy.
