Ila Campbell

Ila Campbell, 78, most recently of Grinnell, Iowa and formerly of Indianola and Gilman, Iowa, passed away on the morning of Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at Unity Point Health Grinnell Regional hospital.

Services for Ila will be held on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 beginning at 11:00 A.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Pastor (and family member) Dale Dorrell presiding. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorials be made to the donor’s local food bank. Ila Faye Baldwin was born January 7, 1945 in Newton, Iowa. She was the oldest of two children to Ray “Sandy” Baldwin and Roberta (Bunker) DeJong. Ila grew up within the Newton and Kellogg area and later graduated from Newton High School in the Class of 1962.

On September 5, 1963, Ila was united in marriage to Gerald Dean Campbell. Together they made a home for themselves in Gilman, Iowa where she resided until 1992. It was in Gilman that she began a family and raised her two children Russ and Teresa. Gerald passed away in 1977 and Ila rose to the occasion as she became head of the family and eventually worked at GTE (Verizon) until she retired in 2003. While at Verizon, she held many roles over the years and took many adventures across the country where she met some of her dearest friends. After retirement and moving back to Iowa, she joined Nationwide Mortgage as an Executive Administrative Assistant for several senior leaders.

She was hardworking and strong for her family. She was an avid reader and sports fan and loved to cheer for all sports teams but favored her beloved Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes. It was a great day for her when the Cubbies finally won the World Series! She was known to collect cookbooks and print recipes although she rarely cooked any of them and loved a good kitchen gadget. She absolutely adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and they brought tremendous joy to her life.

Those left to remember and cherish her memory are her children Russ (Heidi) Campbell and Teresa (Patrick) LaSourd; her grandchildren Haley (Spencer) DeHoedt, Ryan Campbell, McKenzie (Josh Hangman) Niner, Morgan Niner, and Nolan Niner; great-grandchildren Maren DeHoedt and Ivy DeHoedt; brother Dwight (Kathy) Baldwin; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her husband Gerald; her parents Ray Baldwin and Roberta Dejong; and her paternal and maternal grandparents.
