Inez Carlson, 97, of the Villa del Sol, former longtime Gilman area resident, died Saturday, December 8th, at the Villa del Sol. Her death came peacefully at 1:15 p.m. with her family at her side. Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 13th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Inez and her family. Ph 844-1234. Born Inez A. Tow on November 1st, 1910, she was the daughter of Andrew and Minnie (Berntson) Tow. She attended school in Gilman, graduating in 1928. While in school she participated in track, plays, and basketball. The following year, she drove the school bus for Gilman. In 1929, at a local party, she met Martin Carlson. On June 14th, 1930, the two were united in marriage and settled at Adair, Iowa. Five years later, they returned to the Gilman area and he started a portable feed grinding business and later worked for Standard. In the 1950s, they built a new Standard Station in Gilman and operated it for the next 25 years. Inez raised three children and two grandchildren. She was an active member of the Gilman Community Church, the Rebekkah and Eastern Star Onyx Chapter #350 of which she was past Matron, Noble Grand, President and now lifetime 50 plus year member for both lodges. Left to celebrate her life are her daughter Margaret Steier of Haverhill, granddaughters Teresa (Bill) Atcher of Gilman and Kathy Hedrick (Craig Stalzer) of Waukee, great-grandchildren Lauren and Nicholas of Waukee, Lisa of Murfreesboro, TN and Alex of Gilman. In death she has rejoined her beloved husband Martin, her daughters Arlene and Mary, her son-in-law Gerald Steier, parents, and four brothers: Inman, Herman, Clarence and Alfred Carlson.
