The colorful life of 89 year old Jack M. Hayes of Marshalltown came to a gentle close on the afternoon of Friday, March 31st, at the Iowa River Hospice Home with his beloved family present. Funeral services will be held at 10:30a.m.Wednesday, April 5th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Ron Hawn, as officiant. He will be laid to rest with full military honors provided by the combined VFW/American Legion Honor Guard of Marshalltown. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Jack was the son of Clifford and Hazel (Denton) Hayes. He received his education in the Marshalltown Schools. He served our country honorably in the United States Army for two years. On June 28th, 1947, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Barbara L. Ray, in Reno, Nevada. They have made Marshalltown their home throughout their nearly 70 years of marriage. He co-owned Briteway Electric with his brother, Bud, owned Hayes Sporting Goods Store before owning JJ Roundtable/Jax Supper Club for 15 years. Jack was a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge #312 and served as exhalter ruler, was a member of the Little League board, Kiwanis, and the American Legion. He had a genuine passion of sports- especially the Chicago Cubs, Marshalltown Bobcats, MCC Tigers, Iowa Hawkeyes and Auburn Tigers. He enjoyed golfing, F.L.A. fishing trips, bowling and most importantly time with his family and friends. Later in life he loved attending his grandchildren and great grandchildrens activities and sporting events. Upon retirement, he and Barb had their great adventure, cruising down the Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee Rivers on their houseboat before docking in North Alabama. Jack was an entertainer. He loved to sing, play his guitar, make people laugh and was the life of the party. Quick witted, he was always up for a good story and laugh. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Barbara, daughter- Jackie Sampson of West Des Moines; two grandchildren- Kirk (Lisa) Sampson of Auburn, Alabama and Megan (Jason) Buske of Clive; five great-grandchildren- Hayes and Jake Sampson, Ian, Aidan and Addison Buske, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. In death, he rejoined his parents and siblings: Lila, Charlotte, Bonnie, Monte Bud and Clifford, Jr. Write when you get work, Papa Ball.
