Jack E. Sharer, age 89 of Toledo, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at Birkwood Village in Toledo, Iowa under the care of Iowa River Hospice.
Memorial services for Jack will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 beginning at 10:30 A.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, May 11, 2026 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Jack Eugene Sharer was born October 10, 1936 in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was the oldest of three children born to Jack and Lucille (Merritt) Sharer. Jack grew up in Laurel and Ferguson attending school in Laurel. He was a graduate of Laurel High School in 1955. Jack was drafted into the United States Army where he was stationed in France, Germany and Missouri. He was discharged honorably and called upon to serve a second term.
On January 17, 1958, Jack was united in marriage to Jean Collins. They had three children, Marty, Julie and Angie. They made their home and raised their family in Laurel. Jack was a gifted pilot. Over his career, he spent time as a charter pilot as well as a flight instructor. He tried to retire multiple times but always came back to it.
After retiring, Jack looked forward to summers at Lake Thunderhead at his lake house where it was met with friends and family and accompanied with boat rides and fishing. He enjoyed his yearly trips to Canada for fishing and additionally enjoyed flying, golf and watching sports on the TV. His family was a large part of his life and enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his children, Marty (Karen) Sharer, Julie Sharer and Angie (Dave) Fouch; four grandchildren, Ryan (Megan) Sharer, Katie (Brent) Havelka, Joel Fouch and Taylor Fouch; four great-grandchildren, Huxton and Ruthie Sharer and Case and Raegan Havelka; sisters-in-law, Sue Sharer and Barb Freland; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jean Sharer; his parents, Jack and Lucille Sharer; and siblings, Mick Sharer and Teresa Benoit.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Iowa River Hospice for their compassionate care, to Dorothy McHone for her wonderful care, friendship and support to Jack while living at The Embers and to Kayleigh and Holly and the staff at Birkwood Village. Your compassion brought comfort to our family.
