James Louis Amundson passed away quietly at the Iowa Veterans Home on Tuesday September 20th, 2026.
Jim was born to Louis and Alice Burchill Amundson on July 4th, 1946 in Lacrosse, Wisconsin. It seems his birthday instilled a lifelong patriotism in him, as he didn’t even wait to graduate high school before enlisting in the Navy where he proudly served for four years. After discharge from the Navy, he worked at the Iowa Veterans Home for over 30 years and while his job title was painter, he was in truth whatever they needed him to be. This was a man who served proudly however he could. Jim was also a man of simple pleasures; gardening, camping, and rocking on the porch in a rocking chair are about as simple but profound as pleasures get in this life. As a faithful church man, perhaps he knew that contentment in this life is enough with joy to discover in the next. He enjoyed watching and assisting with coaching his own children’s sporting events- he especially loved watching them play football. He loved to joke around with everyone. His laugh was so contagious and he seemed to have a nickname for everyone he encountered.
Jim is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Laurie Amundson of the home, sons Dennis Amundson (Tammy) and Donald Amundson, granddaughter Brooklyn Dunn (Carsen), grandson Brandon Crossman, granddaughter Samantha Amundson, grandson Noah Amundson, great-grandsons Stetsyn, Daxtyn, and one on the way. He is also survived by his brother Thomas Amundson (Lois) and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Jim is preceded in death by his sister-in-law Jackie Gray, mother-in-law Phyllis Lolley and father-in-law Ralph Lolley.
There will be a funeral mass for James Amundson on Friday October 30th 2026 at 10:30AM at St. Francis of Assisi – St. Henry church, followed by inurnment at Riverside Cemetery, and a luncheon at the church following the committal.
The family would like to extend a special thank you for the great care that he received from both the Iowa Veterans Home and Suncrest Hospice.
Mitchell Family Funeral Home is honored to care for Jim and his family.
