James Hungerford

James Hungerford, 81, of rural Marshalltown passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at Central Iowa Health Care in Marshalltown, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 14, 2016, at New Hope Christian Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the Church. Memorials may be directed to the family to be designated at a later date. Military Honors will be provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 839 and by the American Legion Post in the area. James Judson Hungerford was born on March 10, 1935, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was the son of Judson B. and Marian (Van Horn) Hungerford. James graduated from Coggon High School in 1953. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Farm Operations from Iowa State University in 1960 and his Masters degree in Science Education from The University of Iowa in 1967. Jim had Permanent Professional Certification from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. He was a Life Fellow of The Iowa Academy of Science, as well as a Lifetime member of several associations: The National Education Association, The National Science Teachers Association, The Iowa Science Teachers Association, and the Iowa and Iowa State Alumni Associations. He was also a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers and Phi Delta Kappan. Jim was a researcher, as well as an educator. He was published in over a dozen Scientific and Science Education journals. Much of his research was dedicated to the study of Diatoms. In 1974, he was awarded the Outstanding High School Biology Teacher Award. He also received an Excellence in Science Teaching Citation, from the Iowa Academy of Science that same year. James served his country honorably in the United States Navy from November 1955, until September 25, 1957. In 1964, James was united in marriage to Nancy Dougherty in Eldora, Iowa. He had been a school teacher in the Marshalltown Community Schools, first at Anson Junior High from 1962-1968, and then as a Biology Teacher from 1968-1997. After his retirement in 1997, he enjoyed the farm, watching television and movies, but most of all he loved spending time with his family. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 52 years, Nancy, children; Heidi (John) Metz, Chris (Terri) Hungerford and Tim (Teri) Hungerford, grandchildren; Selma and William Metz, Kyra, Cameron, Cale, Ellen, and Sam Hungerford, sister, Karen (Tom) Smith. In death James rejoins his parents, Judson and Marian, his grandchildren Ethan Hungerford and Walter Metz.
