Born August 11, 1933 in Marshalltown, Iowa, Jim was the son of Raymond and Fern (Bridge) Hutcheson. He grew up in State Center, graduating from State Center High School in 1952. He was united in marriage to Ellen Nolta on February 5, 1953. They spent a couple years in the Marshalltown area before Jim enlisted in the United States Airborne. Their son, Steve, was born in Princeton, Indiana – Ellen almost delivered him in the car while on their drive to Kentucky, where Jim was stationed. After honorably serving his country, the family moved back to Marshalltown, Iowa.
Upon his return, Jim held several different jobs, including as a police officer for Marshalltown Police Department. The majority of his career was dedicated to farm implements, where he worked in sales and farm equipment parts department. Jim had a deep love for all things farm related. He moved his family to an acreage outside of Albion, where he and Ellen have made their home for over 55 years. He took great pride in his homestead, making sure the lawn was cut nicely, including the orchard and ditches all the way up to the highway. When he was no longer able to mow himself, he made sure his son was mowing correctly, always watching out the window or sitting on the porch. And he would let them know if they were doing it wrong. Jim was able to remain at home until August 2023.
Jim was an avid Hawkeye fan. He and Ellen traveled to Iowa City for years to cheer on their Hawkeyes. They also traveled to as many Bowl Games as they could, totaling 16 in all. Jim was also a proud veteran. In October 2022, he and his grandson Brant Hutcheson were honored together with Quilts of Valor. He was so proud to share this honor with his grandson.
Jim will always be remembered as jolly, a true joy to be around. He was always so happy to see his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as his kids’ furry friends. He always had a smile and never let his disability get in the way of living his life. He was the best grandpa!
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of over 70 years, Ellen; his children: sons Steve (Joyce) Hutcheson, Jamey (Mindy) Hutcheson, Tim Hutcheson and Troy (Tracy) Hutcheson and his favorite daughter Tammy (Bryan) Amundson; eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; his brother Ronald Hutcheson and two sisters-in-law: Marilyn Staebler and Patsy Hutcheson.
Jim was preceded in death by his son in infancy, Rocky Lee; his parents, Raymond and Fern Hutcheson; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harold and Cordelia (Hartwig) Nolta; and three brothers: Bob, Cecil and Donald Hutcheson.
