James "Jim" Trowbridge

James (Jim) Trowbridge, 93, of Marshalltown, died June 11, 2018. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 15th, at St. Henry’s Catholic Church with Father Don Czapla officiating.  A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 14, from 5 – 7 p.m. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home.  The vigil service will start at 7 p.m..  He will be laid to rest at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.  Memorials may be directed to the family.  For further information or to send a condolence please visit www.mitchellfh.com or call (641) 844-1234. He was born James Charles Trowbridge on June 24, 1924 in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Wilmont Bloomfield Trowbridge and Laura Cooley.  He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1942. After graduation he joined the United States Marine Corp and served his country during WWII.  He saw action in the Pacific on the islands of Peleliu, New Britain, and Okinawa. On Oct 31, 1948 he married his sweetheart Connie Giarratano at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  They lived with her parents and helped with the family business “Giarratano Grocery”.  Jim also worked at Letts Fletcher.  After two years they moved to their farm south of Haverhill where they farmed for 34 years.  They lived in West Des Moines for 6 ½ years and managed Ashworth apartments for Knapp properties.  In 2003 they moved back to Marshalltown to retire and enjoy their grandchildren. Jim was a member of St. Henrys Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, VFW Color Guard and Farm Bureau.  He enjoyed league bowling, square dancing, family picnics on the farm, socializing with friends at the casino, and watching western movies.  Jim was a very proud Marine and was fortunate to be able to go to Washington D.C. on the Honor Flight.  Jim lived his life by the Marines standards of honor, commitment and service. He also loved being a part of the big Italian Giarratano family. His survivors include his three children: Vincene Ridout, Jim (LeAnn) Trowbridge, John (Michele) Trowbridge all of Marshalltown, Grandchildren: Jeff (Susie) Ridout, Johnny (Stefanie) Ridout, Laura (Rod) Stolzman, Jim (Maria) Trowbridge, Amy (Dan) Stephens, Joey (Lindi) Trowbridge, Lindsay (Jeff) Clement, Bart (Samantha Dugan) Trowbridge, Morgan (Jacob) Phipps and Trent (Kristen) Trowbridge. Great-grandchildren: D.J., Jalyn Rose and Jordan Ridout, Christian, Ireland, and Annie Ridout, Holly and Devinny Stolzman, Mary, Brian, Sarah and Samantha Trowbridge, Derek and Lexi Stephens, Harper Trowbridge, Jake, Ben, Allie, Leah, and Peter Clement, Samuel, Cal and Luke Phipps. Great-great-grandchildren: Ella and Ayla Erwin. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Connie, his parents, his sister Edith and one son-in-law, Denny Ridout.
