James Walter Shearer, Jr. graduated to his eternal home to be with his Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, in Landrum, South Carolina at the Smith-Phayer Hospice House. The Shearer family invites all to come to his viewing on Friday, October 11, 2013, 5-8 p.m., and funeral on Saturday, October 12, 2013, 11 a.m. Both services will be held at Fellowship Baptist Church, 1008 East Olive Street, Marshalltown. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, 611 N Center Street. Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for James and his family. Phone: 641-844-1234. Jim was born at home on September 30, 1928, in Colfax, Iowa to James and Florence Shearer and graduated from Colfax High School in 1946. After attending Southwest Texas State University for one semester, he enlisted in the United States Army for 5 years during the Korean War as a military policeman. He was stationed in Brooklyn, New York. He then worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Marshalltown for over 40 years. He married the girl of his dreams, Marlys Verjean Long Shearer, remaining faithful to her for 42 years until the Lord called her home to be with Himself in February, 1996. Jim was a gracious, loving father to his 6 daughters and one son, as well as being a beloved grandpa. Survivors are as follows: Debra (Bill) Fry from Hanover, MD, Andrew (Janna with child) and Nathaniel (Allison); Sondra (Marty) Shott from Torrington, CT, Kristen (Keith)Pelletier with Macey and JosephLaura (Jonathan) Vasaturo with Chase, Kylia, Emily, JaxsonJessica; Julia (David) Black from Greenville, SC, Rebecca (Andrew) Snavely, Benjamin, Sarah; Kindra (Stan) Colston from Cochran, GA, Jacob, James, Racheal, Jackson; Lisa from Marshalltown, IA, Anthony, and Travis with Alexis; Rebecca (Mark) Sullivan from Tryon, NC, Christopher, Kerigan, Braeden, Kileigh; David (Melissa) from Muncie, IN, Storm Alexis, Nathan, Brett; five nephews , and several great nephews and nieces. Jim is preceded in death by his wife Marlys, parents James Walter, Sr. and Florence, two brothers Robert and Ernest Shearer, and one precious great granddaughter Jade Alexandra.
