Jason Jay August, 52, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away Monday, March 23, 2026, at the Iowa River Hospice home surrounded by the love and strength of his family.

Born December 17, 1973, in Marshalltown, he was the oldest of three children born to John and Helen (Alpers) August. He was the best big brother, always the protector of the family. Jason attended Marshalltown schools and was an all-around athlete. His love of sports began at an early age. Jason participated in cross country, football, basketball, track, and baseball. He developed a love for running and he was a state-qualifier for both cross country and track. After graduating from MHS with the class of 1992, Jason received an athletic scholarship to run at Northwest Missouri State. He then graduated from Buena Vista University in April 1998 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work.

Jason was united in marriage to the love of his life, Jennifer Groteluschen, on July 26, 2003. They created a life together in Marshalltown, one built on mutual support, kindness, and love. Jason was so proud to become a father to Landry and Jefferson. He was the best kind of dad, balancing structured care and fun-loving playfulness. He loved being at home: eating pizza, having dance parties, and spending time with his family. As they grew, he made sure to keep current with the trends and lingo of his teenage daughter and loved talking sports with his son.

He was always so generous with his time and heart, and he could truly strike up a conversation with young and old. That kind-heartedness and compassion translated to his career working with youth and families in various capacities. His most recent employer was with Nevada Community School District. He had a heart for the underdog and made sure every person he came into contact with felt genuine kindness and respect.

Jason’s hobbies were as varied as the people he met. He loved weather, history (always the patriot), geography and outdoor activities. His love of sports continued his whole life and included watching college and professional athletics, especially the Iowa State Cyclones and Pittsburgh Pirates. He also enjoyed playing games with his children, watching movies, and attending his children’s activities. Jason made sure his kids knew just how proud he was of them and all their academic and athletic achievements.

Jason will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. His family cherishes the legacy of love he left them and will continue to look for his “angel moments" to get them through the milestones of their lives. Those left to cherish that memory are his loving wife of 22 years, Jennifer and his two children: Landry and Jefferson, as well as his parents: John and Helen August; siblings: Heidi Mann and Trevor (Rebecca) August. He is also survived by his in-laws: Roger and Rose Groteluschen; brothers-in-law: David (Caitlin) Groteluschen and Mark (Mackenzie) Groteluschen; sister-in-law, Beth (Cameron) Sheets; numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and the multitude of people that he has had the privilege of knowing throughout his life.

Jason is preceded in death by grandparents: Joe and Juanita August, Gerald and Mildred Alpers, Robert and Dorothy Groteluschen, Urban and Kay Determan; brother-in-law, Mark Mann; uncles: Jack Jackson and Bill Determan; and nephew, Noah Sheets.

Funeral Mass for Jason will take place on Monday, March 30 at 10:30 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Parish: St. Henry Catholic Church. He will be laid to rest at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends and family are also invited to gather and celebrate Jason’s life beginning with a Vigil Service at 4:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 29 and a visitation to follow until 7:00 P.M. This will also take place at St. Henry’s. The family encourages attendees to dress in Iowa State gear or your favorite sport’s team attire.
