Jean Thomas

Jean Thomas, 88, of Urbandale, formerly of Green Mountain, died Sunday afternoon, October 26th, at the Trinity Center at Luther Park in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 29th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest in the Green Mountain Cemetery. Born Jean Florence Denker on January 22, 1920, in Fenton, Iowa, she was the daughter of Hugo and Alice (Weisbrod) Denker. Jean graduated from Lester High School and received her teaching degree from the Iowa State Teachers College, and later earned her Bachelors degree in Library Science from the University of Northern Iowa. On August 25th, 1940, she was united in marriage to Walter Harvey Thomas in Green Mountain. The couple made Green Mountain their home where she taught elementary school prior to her marriage and later substitute taught at the school. Mrs. Thomas was librarian for the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown and was a member of the Iowa Library Association and the Iowa Media Educators Association. She enjoyed oil painting, gardening, reading, playing the piano, dancing and music. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Barry (Patti) Thomas, Brian (Nancy) Thomas, Lynne (Blaine) Vawter, Kathy McCormack and Roger (Carolyn) Thomas, and her precious grandchildren: Faith Bazal, Tracy Thomas, Tanner McCormack, Tyler McCormack, Trevor McCormack, Kylie Thomas and Brian Thomas. In death she has rejoined her parents, husband, sister Anne and brother David.
