Jean Thompson

Jean Thompson, 86, of Marshalltown, died Wednesday, June 15, at her home while in care of her loving family and the Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Born Jean Owen on June 8, 1925, in Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Archie and Ida (Wintzel) Owen. She received her education in the Marshalltown Schools. Jean was united in marriage to Thomas Thompson. They resided their entire life in Marshalltown. When he died unexpectedly at the age of 49, she and her daughter Sandra drove part of his garbage service route that he owned with his brother- Ed Thompson Sanitation. She was a member of the Salvation Army and attended Center Street Baptist until her health declined. Mrs. Thompson was a kind and gentle-spirited lady who enjoyed car races, bingo, polka (especially Kenny Hofer at the old Forest Park ballroom), baking bread and cinnamon rolls and making her famous potato salad. Family get-togethers were important to her and memorable. She always put her family first no matter what. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Sandra (Stephen) Thompson-Hardwick, Carol (Gary) Dannen, Marilyn Bryant, Connie (Raymond) Rickett, Brenda (Manuel) Neave-Aguero, and Tommy (Sandy) Thompson all of Marshalltown, 11 grandchildren including Russell Thompson whom she raised from birth, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In death,Jean rejoined her parents, husband, four children- Paul, Paulette, Stephen and Brent, and siblings: Norma Church, Deloris Thompson, Joann Stock, Raymond Owen, Paul Owen and Kenneth Owen.
