Jerry Bly, 68, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown Hospital.


Cremation Rites have been accorded. A family-led celebration of Jerry's life will be held on Saturday, July 1 from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at Riverview Park in his favorite spot at the back of the park. Jerry Bly was born on December 26, 1954 in the state of Delaware to Charles and Virgia Bly. He graduated from Tama High School, where he was the star basketball player, and attended community college in Cedar Rapids. He later served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1975. He met Deborah ‘Deb’ Yakel and they were together for a total of 41 years, being married for the past 22 of those years. They were united in marriage on November 17, 2001 in Marshalltown. He worked for the railroad washing the locomotives for 11 years and also worked at JBS in Marshalltown. In his free time, he enjoyed watching basketball, especially the Chicago Bulls. Family was a big part of his life and loved being around them as much as possible.


Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Deborah; children: Jennifer Paul Poppe) Yakel of Fairfax, Iowa, Michael (Shandy) McDowell of Marshalltown, Breanna Bly of Marshalltown, Alejandra Bly of Marshalltown and Tyler Poppe of Marshalltown; grandchildren Aiden Poppe, Dasan McDowell and Nevaeh; siblings Dolly (Eugene) O’Leary, Jeff Bly and Evette Ledsinger and mother, Virgia.


He was preceded in death by his father; brother; Charles Bly and nephew, Michael Bly.
