Jerry Thiessen, age 85, a devoted husband, loving father, proud veteran and dedicated member of the Toledo community, passed away on the morning of Thursday, November 27, 2025 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown with his family at his side.
Jerry was born on November 10, 1940 in Elberon, Iowa. Jerry was the beloved son of Duwane and Lillian (Olsen) Thiessen. Jerry’s journey through life was marked by a profound sense of duty and service. After graduating from Dysart High School in 1959, he proudly served in the United States Army, with the majority of his service time spent overseas.
He was honorably discharged from service and remained rooted at Toldeo for over 60 years. He worked for many years at Meskwaki and the Iowa Juvenile Home in Toledo. He did this all while maintaining a family and his farm which he adored. Jerry was a dedicated member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama, Iowa. He found solace, joy and beauty of the fall which was his favorite time of year.
Jerry’s greatest treasure was his family. He had two children, his son Ryan and daughter, Amber. He met his beautiful wife, Linda (Stanton) while at a wedding dance. They were united in marriage on December 26, 2002 In Maui, Hawaii. Together they joined their families creating a legacy of love and togetherness. In June of 2025, Jerry was honored with having the opportunity to take part on an Honor Flight alongside his son- a memory he has always cherished.
Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his wife of 22 years, Linda Thiessen; his children, Rev. Ryan Thiessen of London, U.K., daughter, Amber, Schulz of Omaha, NE; his step-children, Theresa Shaver of Grimes, IA, Vickie Skyberg of Tama, IA, Steve Buchanan Jr. of Cedar Rapids, IA and Amanda Wobeter of Toledo, IA 20 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren who will all carry on his spirit of kindness and dedication. Jerry is also survived by his two brother, Lavern Thiessen and Roger Thiessen, his sister, Jane Tate along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two children, his step-son; and one brother.
At this time, cremation rites have been accorded by the wishes of Jerry. A celebration of life will be held in the spring at a date to be announced and will take place at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Memorials in Jerry’s name may be directed to his family for a later designation.
