Born on August 14th, 1942, in Marshalltown, he was the son of George and June (Elliott) Svec. He graduated from the Ackley-Geneva High School’s Class of 1960 and was soon serving our country honorably in the United States Marines Corps in Vietnam until 1963.
Upon his return from his time of service, he was employed at Dunham-Bush followed by Kresge’s on Main and Center Street in Marshalltown making donuts. It was there he met a beautiful young woman, Linda Shaffer. The young couple was united in marriage on May 19, 1966, in Ackley, IA. They made their home on a farm near Liscomb until moving to their home in Marshalltown in 1971.
For 22 years, Jim was grounds superintendent at Riverside Cemetery and most recently small engine repair at Thompson’s True-Value for 30 years.
Jim enjoyed fixing things, time with his grandsons, cats and dogs, fishing and hunting, shooting with Trevor and photography with Jarod. He was a member of the Central Iowa Camera Club, Kiwanis and the Izaak Walton League. For 52 years, he owned a 1970 Chevy Blazer he bought new. Many family memories were made in Minocqua, WI for fishing trips- a tradition still to be carried on. In most years, he was a strong Green Bay Packer’s fan.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter Jami (Wendell) Dolezal of Marshalltown and their sons Trevor and Jarod, a cousin Sidnee Rose Benge in Texas, his family at Thompson True-Value and many friends.
In death, he rejoined Linda, his loving wife of 55 years, daughter Lori, his parents and the 2022-23 Green Bay Packers as they totally let him down in game one of this season!
