Joan Carter

Joan Ann Carter, born January 23, 1932 (91), of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2023 at Glenwood Place.

A visitation for Joan will take place on Friday, March 3 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home.

Born Joan Ann Eatinger on January 23, 1932 in Adair County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Albert and Myra (Miller) Eatinger. She graduated from Melbourne High School with the class of 1950. After meeting the love of her life, Jack Carter, the two were united in marriage on August 15, 1951 at her family home. Joan was a dedicated and loving homemaker, caring deeply for her family. Joan and Jack were longtime members of Grace Evangelical Methodist Church and First Congregational Church. When the kids were young, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother and they were very involved with the Youth Fellowship (YF) group at church, taking the kids on multiple trips over the years. They found great joy in hosting an annual youth group Christmas party and a New Years’ Eve party for members of the church. She and Jack volunteered often to cook at the House of Compassion. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening and canning, sewing and quilting.

Left to cherish her memory is her children: Douglas (Esther) Carter of Novato, CA, Richard Carter of Marshalltown, IA and Cynthia Halverson (Mark Vry) of Marshalltown, IA; her grandchildren: Sidney (Josh) Mamanos, Maggie (Brett) Stalzer and Megan Carter (Kyle Austin); great-grandchildren: Jack Mamanos and Marlena Stalzer; her sister, Hattie (Dale) Moyer of Newton, IA and many nieces and nephews.

In eternal life, she is reunited with her beloved husband Jack, her parents Albert and Myra, sister Juanita Freese; daughter-in-law Lee Schaa and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be directed in Joan’s name to Hospice Compassus or the Marshalltown Animal Rescue League.
