Joan Smith, age 77, of Tucson, AZ and Marshalltown, IA, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at her home in Tucson with her husband Walt at her side.  Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 11 at 10:30 A.M. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home, with a visitation taking place one hour prior.  Burial will occur at Rose Hill Memorial Garden immediately following the service.  For additional questions or to leave a condolence, please visit www.mitchellfh.com or call at 641-844-1234. Joan was born October 7, 1942 in Marshalltown to parents Elmo and Anne (Herbst) Davenport.  She graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1960.  She then attended Marshalltown Community College and went on to graduate from the University of Northern Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in K-12 Education and Library Science.   Joan was united in marriage to Walter “Walt” Smith on August 12, 1967 at Grace United Methodist Church in Marshalltown.  Joan was well-known in Marshalltown, having worked for the Marshalltown School District as a librarian for 38 years.  She absolutely loved books.  She and Walt also enjoyed traveling together.  In retirement, they lived in both Tucson and Marshalltown. Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Walt and several nieces and nephews. Joan is preceded in death by her parents Elmo and Anne, and her siblings Gene, Harper, Raymond and Richard.
