Joan Sommerlot, 77, of Marshalltown, died late Tuesday night, April 17th, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services and a celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 21st, at the Central Christian Church with Rev. Gail Thiessen officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home from 6-8:00 p.m. on Friday. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Joan Hooven on September 26th, 1929, in Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Clinton and Maude (Speas) Hooven. She graduated from the Marshalltown High Schools Class of 1947. On July 31st, 1948, she was united in marriage to Robert Sommerlot in Marshalltown. They resided in Ames where he attended ISU and then Reinbeck where he taught until moving to Marshalltown where they owned and operated Bobs Feed and Supply beginning in 1953. Mrs. Sommerlot was a member of the Central Christian Church and the CWF of the church. Joan will be fondly remembered for her love of family, fishing, the Food Channel, cookbooks, doing Jumble and Scrabble and spending time with friends. Left to mourn her loss are her three children: Chris Sommerlot of Colo, Jeff Sommerlot of Albion and Sara Sommerlot (Jim McWeeny) of West Des Moines, four grandchildren: Andy, Angie, Michelle and Jamie and three great-grandchildren: Kenna, Alex and Gracie, her siblings: Bess Frank of Arlington, TX., and Priscilla Arthurs of Brighton, Colorado as well as nieces, nephews, the Sommerlot family and a host of friends. In death she has rejoined her parents, her husband Bob, and siblings Blanche Campbell, Ike Hooven, Hazel Arnold and infant sister, Marilyn
