Joann E. Katzer, 87, of Marshalltown, formerly of Garwin, passed away Wednesday morning, September 8, 2021, at Grandview Heights Nursing & Healthcare while under the care of the Iowa River Hospice. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, September 13 at Fellowship Baptist Church with burial to follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Sunday, September 12 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa River Hospice or a charity of your choice in Joann’s memory. Joann Ellen was born on February 6, 1934 in Tama County, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Lura (Strong) Dobson. She grew up in the area of her birth, attended country school and graduated from the LeGrand High School in 1951. She was united in marriage to Vernon Katzer on April 12, 1953 at the Carlton Brethren Church. The couple made their home in Garwin, where they raised their three daughters. Joann worked as receptionist and in the printing department at Fisher Controls before retiring in 1994. She was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church and the LeGrand Musical and Literary Club. Joann had also volunteered at Child Abuse Prevention Services, Iowa River Hospice and the Marshalltown Hospital. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Connie (Bruce) Bolen of Greentop, MO, Debra Ratliff of Marshalltown and Marcia Ledingham of Clovis, NM; grandchildren: Kathy (Bruce) Kucera, Darin (Melissa) Dostal, Tony (Darah) Bolen, Mark Bolen, Jill (Kenny) Hunt, Clayton (Cassie) Ratliff, Lydia (Darryl) Hardy and Steven De Los Santos; 16 great-grandchildren; her sisters: Mary Etta Fisher and Darlene Hanner, both of Marshalltown and her brother, Dick (Judy) Dobson of Iowa City, along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends. In eternal life, Joann has been reunited with her beloved husband, Vernon; her parents; her sister, Carol Kouba and her stepmother, Peg.
