Joe Cordt

Joel Dennis (Joe) Cordt, 71, died peacefully Monday, June 26, 2023 at UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital in Waterloo, IA after complications from open heart surgery. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, June 30 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. prior to the service. Joe was born on May 30, 1952 in Marshalltown, IA to Rolland Carl (Jim) Cordt and Dorotha Lee (Iverson) Cordt. He graduated from MHS in 1970 and from the University of Northern Iowa in 1974. After college, he returned to his hometown and worked for 40 years for the Marshalltown Park and Recreation Department. In his retirement, Joe substitute taught for many years at Marshalltown High School (a job he loved) and ran the concession stand at the Marshalltown Softball Complex.

Joe married Joan Kelley on February 21, 1986. To this marriage a daughter, Kelley was born. Joan preceded Joe in death on November 6, 2011.

Joe had particular love for 16” softball and played, umpired, was a tournament director and sponsored teams himself in later years. Over the years, he obtained several awards, including the Hall of Fame Award in Chicago for 2017.

Joe is survived by his daughter and son in law, Kelley and Kyle McBride, sister Kristy (Gary) Beckler and brother Craig (Gretchen) Cordt and numerous nieces and nephews. His wife Joan and his parents preceded him in death.
