Joe Egger, 84, of Marshalltown, died Sunday, March 13, at the Iowa Veterans Home where he has resided the past month.Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Memorials may be directed to the family. Born Joseph Allen Egger on August 21, 1926, at State Center, he was the son of Joseph Adam and Susie (Inman) Egger. He received his education in the State Center Schools. Soon after, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served our country honorably during WWII from 1944 to 1946.On July 18, 1946, he was united in marriage to Maxine Wengert at the St. John Lutheran Church in State Center. They made their home in Marshalltown. Joe farmed in the State Center area and retired from Fisher Controls after 24 years of faithful service beginning in 1964. Joe was a member of the UAW Local #893 and the Harlan C. Pfantz American Legion Post #122 in State Center.Joe will be fondly remembered for his love of family, doing woodworking, enjoying the outdoors, and fishing and was an avid John Wayne enthusiast. He will be greatly missed by many. Left to cherish his life are his children: Richard (Nancy) Egger of State Center, Shirley (Ken) Wilson of LeGrand, Donna (Paul) Wiegand of Ames, Deanna (Mark) Turner of Clyde, OH, Debra (Jim) Markert of Bloomington, MN, Dean (Connie) Egger of Clive, and Mary (Mike) Scallon of Cedar Rapids, 21 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and many friends.In death, Joe rejoined his beloved Maxine, his parents, a sister Betty Lincoln and two grandsons.
