Joe attended the Marshalltown School District graduating in 1988 from High School. In July of 1989, he started working at Diamond Vogel Paints on the docks loading trucks, and worked his way up to become dock manager. He was a well-respected manager and well-liked by his employees. Joe was known as a gentle giant, and his favorite saying was off your ass, on your feet, out of the shade and into the heat. He was a dedicated husband, father, son, and brother. He loved camping, fishing, barbequing, watching sports on TV, especially the Sea Hawks and the IOWA HAWKEYES, but the most important thing in his life was his son, his family and friends. Joe married Kris Deeter and they later divorced. From this union they had a son Brandon Joe. In 2009, he married his love of 10 years, Su Stonewall-McAteer. Left to cherish his memories are his wife Su, son Brandon, step-daughter Emily McAteer, step-son Tyler Wilson, his mother Sharon, sister Sherry Kope (Bert Squire), grandmother Delores Denison, his in-laws, Wayne and Donna Stonewall, along with Sus siblings and spouses, and many uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his beloved father Jimmie in 2008, Grandmother and Grandfather Vergena and Joe Pals and Grandfather Charles Denison.
