Joey "Yas" Barker

Joey Yasusuke “Yas” Barker passed away on July 16, 2026 at Iowa Methodist.

Joey was born to Yasusuke “Cary” Wada and Karla Louise Barker Andrews on August 10, 1985. He grew up in Marshalltown, graduating from Marshalltown High School, and attending Marshalltown Community College. Joey loved the Iowa Hawkeyes, music, good movies (and some bad ones), traveling and the Ninja Turtles. Yas was an infectious personality, everyone who knew him from school, from his work at Ortega’s, Kay’s Jewelers, US Cellular, Midnight Ballroom and Members 1st Community Credit Union, and from the community was drawn to his smile and the way he made everyone feel like they were his friend.

Joey is survived by his mother Karla Louise Barker Andrews of Marshalltown, his sisters Joanna Barker of Marshalltown, Jenny Mobley Barker of Marshalltown, Lori Abe (Bryan) of California, Lisa Mann (Chris) of South Carolina, his brother Michael Casey, and his sister Christina Wada of California, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and so many friends.

Special mention needs be made of Luisa Ortega and the rest of the Ortega & Ramirez family who took Joey in at a young age and counted him as one of their own. He adored his grandmother Mary Jeanne Burns who days before passing entrusted Luisa to care for him. As a child he enjoyed playing with friends until dark, playing video games, camping, or just hanging out at home cooking with the family. Joey was very creative, and in his high school years he enjoyed making pottery, painting, and photography. He was always dressed to impress, loved his cologne, and loved his Mitsubishi car.

As a young man, traveling was always something he looked forward to. He especially enjoyed visiting Mexico with family and friends. He stayed in Mexico for months and quickly made friends and was welcomed into the extended family.

Joey's display of affection, loyalty, and love for his family were unmatched. Joey leaves behind a lifetime of happy memories, laughs, and hugs.

In addition to his father, Joey was preceded in death by his brother Joey Yasuke Wada, his Grandma Mary Jeanne Burns, his Grandpa Darrell Barker, and his Grandma and Grandpa Wada.

A visitation for Joey will be held at Mitchell Family Funeral Home on Saturday, July 25, 2026 from 5 to 7PM. The funeral service will also be at Mitchell Family Funeral Home on Sunday, July 26th at 2PM with luncheon to follow. A private burial is scheduled for a later time.
