John Henry Cable, 95, was born on June 9th, 1922 at Des Moines Hospital, the son of John H. Cable and Carrie Bell (Seibert) Cable. Came to Marshalltown when he was just 9 days old. His family house was on 3rd street. He received his education in Marshalltown, Steamboat Rock, and Marion, Iowa. He worked as a railroad Station Agent-Telegrapher for the M&STL between New Ulm, Minn and Peoria, Ill. for 17 years. He also worked for CRI&P between Chicago and Fairfield, Iowa for 2 years. 23 years with C&NW at Marshalltown. While working at Station Agent in Albion he met his lovely wife to be Ruth Henrietta Whaley. They were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa February 19th, 1949. The two made their home in Marshalltown on 18th Street. After retiring in 1982 the two spent several months every year traveling. They had spent two winters in Mission, Texas, and 22 winters in Mesa, Arizona.John belonged to the Masonic Lodge No 108 AF&AM. which he was a 50 year member. Also a member of Signer Chapter No 38 R.A.M. and St Aldermar Commandery No 30 R.S.&M. He was a 50 year member and Past Watchman of Madon Shrine No 38. He was a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and honorary member of the Shrine Tin Lizzies. A life time member of V.F.W. he was a District Chairman of The order of Railroad Telegrapher’s between Mason City, Iowa and Peoria, Ill. John was inducted into the Army in 1943. Served with the 612 Engineer Light Equipment Co. Landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France on June 8th. Was in Halle, Germany at the end of the war. His medals were an arrowhead for the Invasion at Omaha Beach, Five battle Star’s and a Bronze Star.His hobbies were gardening, fishing, painting with oils and acrylics, and wood carving.Memorials may be directed to Albion Presbyterian Church or the Shriner’s Children Hospital. He was preceded by his wife Ruth and his parents. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 16th, 2018 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home at 10:30, a visitation will be held on Thursday March 15th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home Staring at 5 – 7:00 p.m. With a burial at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.
