John Harbin, 53, of Green Mountain, Iowa, died at his residence on Thursday, July 7, 2011. Following cremation, a celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 12, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. In keeping with Johns wishes, everyone is invited to come dressed casually and comfortably. A private family burial will take place at the Bethel Grove Cemetery at a later date. John was born February 8, 1958, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of John and Elsie (Pfile) Harbin. He was raised in Iowa City, Marshalltown and Green Mountain where he went on to graduate from the Green Mountain High School. During his lifetime John was employed with McCubbin Seed Farm and Handy Manufacturing. John enjoyed watching NASCAR, rock hunting, grilling out and having a cold beer, listening to music and watching old western movies. He especially liked muscle cars and owned a 1970 Chevy Chevelle. John also cared for animals and was the first person in the neighborhood to take in and care for the occasional stray cat that would wander through the area. Above all John was a dear friend and brother who will be greatly missed by his family.John is survived by his best friends Bonnie and Jeff Somers of Green Mountain, his sister Linda (David) Callahan of Beaman, his Aunt Mildred Heckert of Marshalltown, his godsons; Travis Somers of Green Mountain and Cody Somers of Marshalltown and several cousins. John was preceded in death by his parents and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
