John Edward Legrand, 84, of Marshalltown, died January 4, 2009, at Grandview Heights while in the care of Iowa River Hospice and his family. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 9, 2009, at St. Henrys Catholic Church with Father Don Czapla officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Memorials may be directed to St. Henrys Catholic Church or Iowa River Hospice. John was born on February 29, 1924, on the family farm near Colo, Iowa. He was the son of Edward and Emma (Edler) Legrand. He graduated from Colo High School and went on to Business College in Marshalltown. He served our country honorably in the US Army, Infantry Division, during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart. On December 26, 1947, he married Hildegard Maria Raab at St. Marys Catholic Church. The couple had lived their entire married lives in Marshalltown. To this union, two sons were born- Mark Stephen Legrand and John David Legrand. John was an independent livestock broker, buying and selling hogs. He was an exceptionally loyal and giving person, always trying to please others. He was strong in both courage and faith. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks, and St. Henrys Catholic Church. He enjoyed livestock, working in the garden, and was fond of cats and dogs. He is survived by his wife of over 61 years, Hildegard Legrand; his sons, Mark Stephen (Mei) Legrand of Vienna, VA, and John David Legrand of Bettendorf, IA; his sister-in-law Isolde Deninger; and several nieces and nephews. In death, he has rejoined his parents and his sister Leona McDonough.
