John Herbert Nelson

John Herbert Herb Nelson, 85, of State Center, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at State Center Nursing and Rehab Center with his loving family by his side. Funeral services for Herb will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Joan Swander officiating. Public visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home West Marshall Chapel in State Center, Iowa. Visitation will also be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at St. Paul Lutheran Church from 11:30 a.m. until services at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed in Herbs name to his family. John Herbert Nelson was born on December 10, 1927 in Colo, Iowa, the son of Jacob N. and Georgia Mae Leslie Gunder Nelson. He was raised and educated in the Colo school district graduating High School in 1946. Herb was united in marriage to Alice Mattingly on September 5, 1948, which they were later divorced. On November 5, 1966, Herb married the love of his life Margaret McCarthy at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Herb came to State Center to work on the farm for Harold Blood, later in life he was employed at the State Center Grain and Feed as well as Green Mountain elevators. He worked at Fishers for 23 years before retiring in 1992. Herb was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, UAW and the State Center Historical Society. He had a true passion for cards, camping, making picture frames, loving his dog Precious and anything to do with his grandchildren. Left to cherish his memory is his wife Margaret; children: Mike (Chris) Riemenschneider, Ray (Lyn) Nelson, Kay (Ken) Stewart, Rick (Gail) Riemenschneider, John (Marie) Nelson, Scott (Kari) Riemenschneider and Ron Nelson; grandchildren: Amber (Josh) Evans, Jacob (Brittany) Nelson, Travis (Krystal) Stewart, Nichole (Troy) Higginbotham, Will (Jen) Riemenschneider, Sierra Nelson, Drew (Terrissa) Riemenschneider, Stephen Nelson, Scott Nelson, Marissa Nelson and Harley Nelson; great-grandchildren: Gregory and Landon Higginbotham and Willow Riemenschneider. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Robert and one granddaughter, Heather who was waiting for him.
