John Osgood

John Osgood, 89, of Marshalltown, Iowa entered into eternal life and was re-united with his beautiful bride on the afternoon of May 21, 2023 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown, Iowa surrounded by his daughters.


Services for John will take place on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at the Central Christian Church beginning at 10:00 a.m. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. John will be laid to rest at Center School Cemetery in Marshalltown where he will receive military honors. Memorials in John’s name may be directed to the Iowa River Hospice Home or the Central Christian Church in Marshalltown. John G. Osgood was born May 7, 1934 to parents Lee and Beulah (Keese) Osgood in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was one of nine born to the family. John grew up in Marshalltown, Iowa and attended school within the Marshalltown School District. Following school, John was enlisted in the Iowa National Guard before serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. John was later honorably discharged and returned home and began work on the farm.


On March 19, 1955, John was united in marriage to the love of his life, Dorothy Pierce in Tempe, Arizona. They resided together in Chandler, Arizona until 1958 when they came to live in Marshalltown, Iowa. Together John raised along with Dorothy their three daughters, Virginia, Deborah, and Christine. John worked in many occupations and places over the years. He worked for Duncan-Conoco for many years in addition to Gray-Iron Foundry in Marshalltown and Eagle Iron Works in Des Moines, Iowa where he later retired. He was the longtime caretaker of Camp Juliette in Marshalltown where he was given the title of honorary girl scout.


John was a member of the American Legion of Marshalltown and the Central Christian Church in Marshalltown. In his free time, John loved to be outdoors. He enjoyed doing yardwork, taking fishing trips, spending time identifying the different birds that were around, and taking motorcycle trips. His family meant everything to him and he adored spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


John is survived by his children, Deborah (Roger) Lakey, and Christine (Mike) Jones; his son-in-law Chuck Cagley; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; his siblings, Melvin (Joyce) Osgood, Carl (Judy) Osgood, and Howard (Karen) Osgood; his brother-in-law, David Pierce; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins and additional family members.


He is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy; daughter, Virginia Cagley; his parents, Lee and Beulah Osgood; his siblings, Calvin Osgood, Betty Stanton, Richard Osgood, Jim Osgood, and Roger Osgood; his mother and father-in-law Mildred and James Pierce; his brother-in-law William Greer and his sisters-in-law Betty Greer and Janice Pierce.
