Obituary: John Link Sagar, age 92, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on August 29, 2024, at home with family. He was born on December 4, 1931, in Webster City, Iowa, to Verla Jean (Stuart) and Theodore Francis “Buster” Sagar.

John graduated from Webster City High School, where he participated in sports. He attended Webster City Junior College. He enlisted and was proud of his service to his country during the Korean War from 1950-1954. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force as an Airman 1st Class. He married Helen Marie Douglas of Loma, Colorado, in November 1954 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and in November, they would have celebrated 70 years of marriage together.

John pursued his education using VA benefits, earning a degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State University. He was hired by Iowa Electric Light and Power and remained with the company as it transitioned through several identities, ultimately becoming Alliant Energy. He retired for the first time in 1991 but returned for another stint before his final retirement in 1995.

John was a beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He had a passion for history, American Indians, traveling and his extended family. He will be remembered for his work with many organizations, including First Methodist Church, Life member of the Elks; American Legion, 40&8; VFW, Life Member; Charter member of Matin Kiwanis; Iowa, Missouri and Colorado Archeological Societies; and Hargrave Cemetery Association.


John is survived by his loving wife Helen; son Ken (Holly) Sagar and his children Celene (Paul) Bornhoft of Norwalk, Iowa; Cari Sagar (Brandon Brown) and Kay Brown of Indianola, Iowa; Matt (Liz) Sagar of Pella, Iowa; John (Sarah) Sagar of Iowa City, Iowa; Nick Mennen and great grandchildren: Keaton Mennen, Khloe Mennen, Karsen Mennen, and Kambrie Mennen of Van Meter, Iowa; son John (Emily) Sagar and grandson Trevor (Essence) Sagar and great-grandson Leon John Sagar; grandson Greg Brown Jr. (Kim Palmer) and great-grandchildren Lizzy and Tempie Brown; granddaughter Cora Brown; grandson Kyle Brown; and son Jerry Sagar’s children: Tracy Sagar of Marshalltown, Iowa; Candra Sagar of Dallas, TX; and Cali Sagar of Dallas, TX.


He was preceded in death by his parents, his aunt Millie (Sagar) and Uncle Harold Erskine, his sister Sondra (Sagar) Ingebritson and her husband Donald Ingebritson, his brother Theodore Karl “Ted” Sagar, his son Jerry Dean Sagar, and his niece Pam Bozell.


A visitation will be held at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home, 1209 Iowa Avenue W, Marshalltown, Iowa on Wednesday, September 4th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. A private graveside will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Iowa River Hospice and Elks National Foundation in John's memory.


The family wishes to express their gratitude to the Veterans Administration for the excellent healthcare service, and to Iowa River Hospice. John will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
