John Sims Sr., 66, of Marshalltown, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, November 16, 2014. Funeral services and a celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 22, 2014, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Hargrave officiating. John will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery with military honors offered by Veterans of Foreign Wars Harry C. Harter Post #839 and American Legion Frank Lewis Glick Post #46. A visitation for family to greet friends will be held from 4:30 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 21, 2014, also at the funeral home. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for John and his family. John Vivian Sims, was born to Marion and Mary Ethel (Brooks) Sims on October 16, 1948, in Buchner, Virginia. After high school graduation, John joined the United States Air Force and served our country honorably for 22 years. John married, Fayetta Marie Nelson, the love of his life, on January 6, 1970, in Great Falls, Montana. Faye passed away in October 2012, leaving Johns heart broken. John retired from the State of Iowa Correctional Facility in Newton. To keep busy, John was a taxi driver in Marshalltown. He will be remembered as a funny person. He loved talking to people and telling stories and enjoyed fishing as well. Playing poker, and scratch tickets were among Johns past times, and he was also a good cook. John is survived by his children: Lori (Raul) Gardea, Wendy Sims, and John Sims, Jr.; four grandchildren: Kevin (Virginia) Allen, Kristina (Logan) Wolf, Kristopher Gardea, and Katie Sims; great-granddaughter, Issabella Faye Allen, who is six months old; his mother, Mary; and brothers: Ricky Sims and Haywood Sims. In death, John rejoins his beloved wife, Faye Marie Sims; grandson, Kyle Sims; sister, Frances Sims; and his father, Marion Sims.
