Johnny (John Cleon) Smith, 70, of Laurel, died Monday, November 15th, at his home with his family at his side after an eight month battle with cancer. John was in care of his family and the Iowa River Hospice. His wife Karen took time off from her job at Wal-Mart to take care of him 24-7. John was the only son born to Graham Cleon and Wilma Hazel (Lutes) Smith. He graduated from the Laurel High School Class of 1959. He was a self-employed farmer helping his did on the family farm. He also worked part-time at the Laurel Body Shop with Roger.He was united in marriage to Karen Kay Kvinlaug on March 14th, 1964, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They were blessed with their one and only son, Michael Scott Smith- at home and dog Scruffy. John liked to fish and go to auctions and gun shows. John leaves behind his wife Karen and son Michael, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Tom and Judy Campbell of Marshalltown, his mother-in-law Bernie Kvinlaug of Marshalltown, several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Preceding him in death was his parents Graham and Hazel Smith and father-in-law Jerry Kvinlaug. In accordance with Johns wishes, his body has been cremated with no visitation or funeral services.
