Joseph James Baum Iii

Joseph James Baum, III Joseph James Baum, III, age 64, passed away on June 23rd, 2022, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, IA after a brief illness. Joe was born in February 1958 to Joseph James Baum II and Sharell Holverson in Manchester, Iowa. Joe attended local schools in Iowa City, IA. He graduated from high school at Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, WI where he was a star athlete in football as well as track and field. Joe was a member of the Air Force from 1976-1979. He lived at the Veterans Home for over 30 years and was beloved by fellow residents and staff. He felt very much at home at IVH and spoke highly of the good people living and working there who became like family to him. Joe was known by many at IVH through his role delivering mail throughout the campus. Joe was preceded in death by his father Joseph James Baum, MD of Floyd, VA. He is survived by his mother, Sharell Holverson, of St. Augustine, FL and brother, Stephan F. Baum, MD (Sherri) of Hillsborough, NC, and half-siblings David C. Baum of Sanford, NC and Lisa Baum Betts (Tim) of Raleigh, NC, in addition to nieces and nephews Chelsey Baum, Mary J. Baum, Jarod Betts, Adam Betts, and great-nephew Ayden Nackoul. Joe was a passionate music lover and enjoyed playing and collecting guitars. Group outings with IVH to restaurants and various activities in the community were also favorite pastimes. Until the last few years, he made annual summer trips to Virginia for family gatherings at his father’s home. As a child, he loved animals, especially his family’s German Shepherd and Irish Setter, as well as camping, fishing, and being a Boy Scout member.
