Katheleen Plum

Katheleen A. Plum, 74, of Marshalltown, and formerly Newton, Iowa, joined her heavenly home on Thursday, January 5, 2023.

Funeral services for Katheleen will be held on Tuesday, January 10, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Memorials may be directed to her son, Matthew. Katheleen Plum was born on June 23, 1948 in Marshalltown, Iowa to William W. and Neva I. (Corrick) Plum. Kathy was the oldest of their 4 children.

Kathy graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1966 and then attended Marshalltown Community College where she received her associate degree in drafting. Kathy had a diverse career path that included her many joys in life. She worked at Fisher Control as one of the first draftswoman in the department, in the Scottsdale School District as a teacher’s aide, co-owned a family office supply business, Green Tree Weaving as a clothing weaver and finally at the Sunspot Solar Observatory in New Mexico as the kitchen manager who prepared the daily meals and catered special events for international guests. However, her favorite job and title was as a mother and grandmother.

Kathy previously lived in Arizona and New Mexico before moving back home to Iowa. Kathy was a member of the Jasper County Church of Christ. She lived life fully while enjoying her gardening, cooking and traveling the United States. She will be fondly remembered for her memorable trips with her boys and grandchildren and for getting in her car taking off to destinations unknown.

Kathy is survived by her son: Matthew (Elizabeth) Averhoff of Colliersville, Tennessee; daughter-in-law Lisa Averhoff of Newton, Iowa and grandchildren: Liam Averhoff, Corinne Averhoff, Andrew Vasquez, Kevin Vasquez, Jacob Averhoff and Nathan Averhoff. She is also survived by her two sisters: Tami Uptain of Marshalltown, Iowa and Deborah (Butch) Horn of Melbourne, Iowa.

Kathy is preceded in death by her son: Shad Averhoff, grandson: Sean Vasquez, parents: William and Neva Plum, brother: Doug Plum and her ex-husband, Larry Averhoff.
