Katherine Buchanan

Katherine Buchanan, 99, of LeGrand, died Saturday afternoon, September 24, at the Villa del Sol in Marshalltown where she has resided since February of 2010. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 29, at the LeGrand Friends Church. She will be laid to rest in the LeGrand Friends Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Born on November 19, 1911, north of Dillon, Iowa, she was the daughter of Harry and Irene (Keen) Gibson. She graduated from the LeGrand High School and later from the Hamilton Business College in Marshalltown.On her birthday (November 19), of 1932, she was united in marriage to Ward Buchanan in Illinois. They made their home in LeGrand. Katherine was employed at Sears Roebuck in Marshalltown, the Tama Livestock Sale Barn, Times-Republican as a correspondent, LeGrand telephone operator, sorted seed corn for O.W. Johnson and did housekeeping for various area families. She was a member of the LeGrand Friends Church, the LeGrand Alumni Association, taught Sunday school for over 30 years, LeGrand Literary Musical Club, LeGrand Senior Citizens, and was a former Eastern Star member. She and Ward enjoyed wintering in Texas and summers in Oregon for many years. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Nancy (Lyle) Matney of LeGrand, Dick (Linda Huston) Buchanan of Marshalltown and Mary Margaret Peggy Egleston of Marshalltown, her grandchildren: Julia, Scott, Daniel, Stacy, Kathy, Kristi, Kendra, Toni, Lee, Jr. Todd, Christopher and Richard, eight step-grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and several step-great grand and five great-great-grandchildren. In death, Katherine rejoined her beloved husband Ward, her daughters Barbara Lorenzen and Beverly Buchanan, her brothers Eugene Bud and Leland Gibson, her parents and grandchildren Karla and Ronald.
