Kelly Dean Hargan, 51, of Marshalltown, “went home to meet his Maker” on Tuesday, September 20th, 2022. Kelly has made his home in Marshalltown with his life partner, Mary and their daughter, Suzanne Hargan. He loved his daughter with all his heart, she was his world. He helped Mary raise her children, Hunter, Ryder, Shelby and Scotty. He loved being a Poppa to two beautiful granddaughters, Freyja and Marie. He said being a father was a dream come true but being a grandparent felt amazing. He said family is everything.
Kelly was born to two wonderful parents, Robert “R.E.” Hargan and Cheryl (Spratt) Hargan, who taught him many life skills. Kelly has two surviving brothers: Bill “Uncle Hillbilly” (Melissa) Hargan of Arkansas and Bob (Michelle) Hargan of Oskaloosa. He was an uncle to Jordan, Miranda, Hannah, Maddi and Justyn.
Kelly’s faith was undeniable. He was a hardworking, hard-headed man. He said what he meant and meant what he said. He would argue with the best of them and you wouldn’t win because he was never trying to be wrong. He would say, “You can’t argue with right.” He believed that a man is only as good as his word and if you don’t have that, you don’t have nothing. Kelly would never back down from anything or anyone, he was willing to go the distance. He was tougher than nails, I can promise you that. He was strong as an ox and as stubborn as a mule. He was an all-around good man.
With that being said, Kelly also had a soft side to him. He would give you the shirt off his back and he loved unconditionally. He would leave notes all around the house saying “I love you” for Mary and Suzanne and would do subtle little things to let them know how much they meant to him.
He enjoyed tinkering around in the garage. He stayed busy and always had to be doing something. He stayed busy doing woodworking projects and fixing and building things. Even if things didn’t need fixed he would modify them to how he thought they should be. He was a jack of all trades and according to him a master of all of them. He would put his initials on all his tools and put his name on all his wood projects he made. He enjoyed lighting off fireworks and starting huge bonfires. He enjoyed listening to music and had a beautiful voice. He had his own lil dance moves. He was goofy and sarcastic and would make you laugh with some of the things he would say or do. He enjoyed scratching off lottery tickets. He had an overabundant amount of flashlights. He enjoyed playing cribbage with his friend, Hank and if Hank would win, Kelly would throw that cribbage board into the wood-burning stove. He would say, “Do you wanna bet?” I will let it all ride and still come out winning. Kelly loved sweet treats and pastries.
But most of all, Kelly loved spending time with his daughter and his family. He was an all-around good man. He will be dearly missed by all who loved him.
Kelly is reunited in Heaven with his father R.E. Hargan and mother Cheryl Hargan along with his brother Jim Hargan and half-sister Cheryl.
A celebration of life to honor Kelly’s memory will be Saturday, October 8th, 2022 at 3:00 P.M. at the Izaak Walton League in Marshalltown.
