Larry Edward Bumsted was born August 13th, 1945 to Emery and Iris (Carson) Bumsted in Marshalltown, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm near Whitten and attended Union-Whitten High School where he graduated with the class of 1963. Larry would go on a blind date his senior year with the woman who would become the love of his life, Connie Jo Fiscus. Larry and Connie were married on July 28,1963. Together they would start a family and raise their two children, Lorrie and Scott. Larry and Connie worked side by side on the farm until his recent retirement in 2021. Larry and Connie were blessed with 60 years together.
At a very young age Larry learned how to hunt and shoot as part of life on the farm. He got to be very good at shooting pheasants and impressed his uncle Alva Bumsted so much so that in 1967 his uncle introduced him to the sport of trapshooting. Trapshooting soon became an integral part of the families life as Larry was really good at it. Larry would travel to trapshoots with the family in tow, first shooting the smaller shoots and then the bigger shoots where he won numerous trophies. Over his lifetime Larry shot 753,375 registered targets. Trapshooting took Larry and his family all across the United States shooting with many and making many dear friends. Larry and Connie both shot for a number of years as well as son Scott. Larry shot so well that he was inducted into the Iowa State Amateur Trapshooting Association Hall of Fame in 1985 for his numerous accomplishments. At the national level, Larry was inducted into the Amateur Trapshooting Association Hall of Fame in 2004. Larry was on a total of 31 All American Teams during his 52 years of shooting. His final appearance on an All American team was in 2019. The next year Larry suffered a debilitating injury to his hands in a farming accident that left him unable to hold a gun. Around that time his daughter Lorrie picked up the shooting bug and Larry moved from shooter to coach. Larry enjoyed watching Lorrie shoot the last few years of his life. Larry was the first person at the Grand American (the largest shoot in the sport) to break 100 straight in the singles, handicap, and doubles events all in one day. He was also the first person to break 100 straights on all 4 doubles events at the Grand American. In 1988, he and fellow shooter Dave Berlet set a then 200 16's event shoot-off record, going an additional 725 targets straight in a shoot-off before Larry finally won the title.
Larry and Connie split their time between Florida staying at the Silver Dollar Gun Club, home in Iowa, and Red Lake Ontario, Canada where Larry pursued his other passion with the family, fishing for walleyes and northerns. Fishing with the family started when Larry was a child and was a family tradition that he passed down to his grandchildren. Larry was an expert fisherman but took his greatest joy in watching and helping everyone else on the boat catch the “big ones”.
Those left to remember, cherish and continue his legacy are his loving wife Connie; his children Lorrie (Vince Valois) of Odessa, Florida and Scott (Marla) Bumsted (Whitten, Iowa); his nine grandchildren Bailey Metzner of Newburgh, New York, Aaron (Shyanne) Metzner of Palm Harbor, Florida, Alexandria (Jerome) Barnes of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Jordan Barnes of Denver Colorado, Morgan (Jesse) DiBartolo of Erlanger, Kentucky, Logan Bumsted of San Diego, California, Samantha (Chris) Kendall of Eldora, Iowa, John (Rhonda) Eastridge of Ames, Iowa, Kayla (Joe) Clapsaddle of Steamboat Rock, Iowa; his great grandchildren Christopher (3), Daylin (11 mos), Gabriella (1), Scott (14), Olivia (10), Raegan (5), James (14), Taevon (12), Donathon (10), Addie (2), Lilly (12), and Addie (10).
