Larry Cunningham, 79, of Marshalltown, longtime Iowa State Trooper, died Saturday, March 1st, at the home of Roger Freiboth and Cristin Cunningham while in his familys loving care and the Iowa River Hospice. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 6th, at St. Marys Catholic Church with Fr. Jim Miller officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home from 5-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Larry and his family. Ph 844-1234. Born on February 16th, 1929, in Mason City, he was the son of John and Regina (Lang) Cunningham. He graduated from high school in Mason City, and attended Iowa State University and Drake University. He served our country honorably in the United States Army. On June 19th, 1952, in Mason City, he was united in marriage to Mariann Deming. Larry was a police officer for the city of Mason City until becoming a State Trooper for the Iowa State Highway Patrol in 1956. He retired in 1994. Mr. Cunningham was a member of the St. Marys Catholic Church; Iowa State Troopers Association helped in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Little League and enjoyed traveling, gardening, photography and his family. Following retirement, Larry moved to California and returned to the area 18 months ago. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Terry Cunningham of Iowa City, Sharon (Harold) Foulk of LeGrand, Casey Cunningham, Guy Cunningham (Patricia Wengert) of Des Moines, Todd Cunningham of Des Moines, Jay (Beth) Cunningham of Richmond, VA, Julie (Mike) Ellis of Marshalltown and Cristin Cunningham (Roger Freiboth) of rural Marshalltown, 20 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and sisters Janet Kelly of Mason City and Ruthann Walljasper of Trenton, MO. In death he has rejoined his parents and wife Mariann. Also Patricia Cunningham and brother Roger Cunningham.
