Larry Decamp

Larry DeCamp, 77, of Ankeny, formerly of Marshalltown, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 10, 2021 while traveling in Murray, Utah. Per the wishes of Larry and his family, cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 24 at 10:00 A.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home, 1209 Iowa Ave., Marshalltown, Iowa. He will be laid to rest at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for later designation. For additional questions or condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com or call 641-844-1234. Born May 2, 1944 in Eagle Grove, Iowa, Larry was the only son of Leonard and Avenell (Flower) DeCamp. Larry and his two sisters grew up in Eagle Grove, where he graduated from high school in 1962.  He enlisted in the United States Navy in August of 1962, honorably serving for six years during the Vietnam Era. His rank was Petty Officer QM3 and he served aboard the USS Colonial (LSD-18). The Colonial served in several campaigns in the Vietnam War between 1965 and 1968. Larry received the following medals during his time of service: Good Conduct Medal (1st Award), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Vietnam) and National Defense Service Medal.  Upon his return, he lived in several places, including a time in Galesburg, Illinois, before settling down in the Marshalltown area. Larry owned and operated Simple Solutions, a computer operating company. He loved any type of computer and electronics. He also enjoyed his work as an Amazon driver before settling into retirement. A proud veteran, Larry was a member of the local American Legion, serving for several years as Commander of Post 46. He was an excellent baker and cook, often sharing meals with neighbors and friends, especially when they needed the extra help. Larry was described as “a good guy with a big heart.” Larry is survived by his sisters: Barb (Dennis) Bartholomew of Eldora and Dona (Gary) McEnelly of Minnesota; several nieces, nephews and cousins and his dear friends, John and Deanna Schrempf. He is preceded in death by his parents.
