Larry Good, 84, of Marshalltown, passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, of a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was under the care of St. Croix Hospice at Accura HealthCare of Marshalltown and previously The Willows of Marshalltown.
Per Larry and his family’s wishes, cremation rites have taken place. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Friday, January 10, 2025, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 A.M, Saturday, January 11, 2025 at First Congregational Church in Marshalltown, with a luncheon following. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
Larry Dean Good was born on July 27, 1940, at Newton to C.W. and Jennieve (Patterson) Good. He was the 7th of 8 children; his mother passed away in the early years of his life.
Larry was raised by Forest and Martha Halverson of Laurel, where he lived most of his school years. He attended elementary school and graduated from Laurel High School. During part of his high school years, he became a member of the Paul and Mary Determan family of Haverhill. Larry gained siblings, Gene, Pamela and Deborah.
While attending Marshalltown Community College, Larry became a member of the Cleo and Helen Lamb family. He gained siblings, Shirley, Don, Gary, Ken, Richard and Elaine.
Larry proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Military Police. He was stationed guarding the White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico and the 59th M.P. Company in Bremerhaven, Germany from 1961 to 1965.
On September 30, 1967, he was united in marriage with Sandra ”Sam” Thomas in Newton, Ia. The couple was blessed with 2 daughters, Cassandra and Christina. The couple worked side by side for many years in their construction businesses. Larry was the original Good Guy.
Larry was a member of First Congregational Church and the American Legion Post #46 in Marshalltown. For many years Larry and Sam located members of the 59th M.P. Company and arranged reunions of those that had served in Bremerhaven between 1957 through 1972. Later in life, Larry and Sam had a winter home in Fort Myers, FL. They enjoyed golfing and new friendships.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Kathleen (John) Schermerhorn, Max Good, Marlow (Judy) Good, Jerry Good, Don Good, Melvin Good, and Judi Peterson. Also preceding him were Forest and Martha Halverson, Paul and Mary Determan and Cleo and Helen Lamb. Lamb siblings, Don, Gary, Richard (Marge), Elaine (Melvin} Budke, and Tony Sternola.
Left to cherish his memory; his wife of 57 years, Sam Good of Marshalltown; daughters Christina Good of Marshalltown; Cassandra (Dennis) Schapker of Cincinnati, OH; 5 grandchildren: Christian and Nathan of Cincinnati, Erin of Amsterdam, and Brandon and Austin of Cincinnati.
Also surviving are Rose Marie Good, Ray Peterson, Gene (Ann) Determan, Pamela (Roger) Detrich, Deborah (Jack) Jennings. Shirley Sternola, Judy Lamb and Ken (Peggy) Lamb.
Because of help Larry received growing up, he had pride of being a role model, mentor and had abilities to give back to nieces, nephews, family members, employees, AAU ball teams, and relatives or teens that crossed the doorway and needed a place to live or help with their lives.
