Born Larry Lee Hinegardner on March 17, 1935 in Marshalltown, Iowa, he was the oldest of three children and only son of Arlo and Caroline (Petermeier) Hinegardner. He graduated from Montour High School, where he excelled at basketball and was valedictorian of the class of 1953. After his graduation from Wartburg College, where he continued playing basketball, he joined the United States Army Reserve.
After meeting the love of his life, Carleen Kvinlaug, the couple was united in marriage on New Years’ Eve in 1960 at Gilman Church. They made their home in Montour, where they raised their three children.
Butch was always very hard-working and instilled that work ethic into his family. He was known early on for his talent and smooth moves around his family’s popular skating rink (Sportsman’s Lake Skating Rink), where he spent every night sanding wooden wheels to make them round again for the next day. He eventually took over his father, Arlo’s businesses: North Star Hunting Preserve and North Star Fish Hatchery. He hauled a lot of fish over his lifetime and his favorite saying when working at the fish hatchery was "One more draw" and "knuckles in the mud." The legacy of these family businesses has continued as they are now each operated by Butch’s two sons. Though his free time was few and far between, he loved playing cards and always enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing. He would say “OooooWeee!” when he caught a fish, found a mushroom, when hunting or when he was excited. Butch got to go hunting in Alaska and Canada and he looked forward every year to his fishing trips to Leech Lake with family and friends. Even into his sixties he was excellent at snowskiing, skating and dancing. He was an avid drinker of coffee and enjoyed his first cup every morning with his cats outside. He was a member of Grace Community Church in Toledo.
Butch is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carleen (Kvinlaug) Hinegardner; his children: Tracy Hinegardner, Terry (Teresa) Hinegardner and Todd (Jodi) Hinegardner; his grandkids: Danelle Hinegardner (Mark Youngbear), Brittney (Jaime) Morales, Nichole Stanley, Dusty Bailey (Jason Moore), Tyler (Breanna) Sawyer, Amber Hinegardner, Madisen (Gavin) Timp, McKenzie Hinegardner, and Sailor Hinegardner; his great-grandkids: December, Braxton, Dayviah, Dayton, Mayson, Myla, Kamdyn, Paizlee, Emily, Aurola, Oaklynn, Kate, and Aubree. He is also survived by an aunt, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, and his many cats.
In eternal life, Butch is reunited with his parents, Arlo and Caroline Hinegardner; his sister Karen and brother-in-law Richard Deutche; his sister Donna Hinegardner and his in-laws, Carl and Luella Mae Kvinlaug.
