Larry Minnich

Larry Minnich, age 77, of Garwin, Iowa passed away at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa on Thursday, March 12, 2020 with his wife at his side. At this time cremation rites have been accorded and a memorial service for Larry will be held privately under the direction of his family at a later date. Mitchell Family Funeral home is caring for Larry and his family. Larry Wayne Minnich was born August 29, 1942 to parents Harold and Eileen (Reynolds) Minnich in Marshalltown, Iowa. Larry was the middle child born to the family. He grew up attending school in Conrad and graduated with the class of 1960. Following high school, Larry answered the call of his country and enlisted in the United States Navy. He served our country proudly from 1961-1965 as a medic. While enlisted in the Navy, Larry had begun a family of his own having three children. In December 1989, Larry was united in marriage to Birdeen “Birdie” E. Coburn. As a result of this marriage Larry became the father to two more wonderful children. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Larry went to work for Fisher Controls in Marshalltown and made a home for him and his family in Garwin, Iowa.Larry was a member of the Conrad American Legion and the UAW Local 893. He was a proud member of his union. He enjoyed playing cards with his card club, boating trips to Lake Red Rock for fishing, reading books, always keeping up with everything with the caucus’s, tending to his vegetable garden, going on car rides to look for the deer, having coffee with his friends, and spending time with his family. Left to remember and cherish his memory are his wife of 30 years Birdie; his children Doug (Michele) Minnich, Jeff Minnich, Debbie (Jim) O’Dell, Angie Himschoot, and Rick (Jess) Himschoot; his grandchildren Paul, Matthew, Blake, Nikita Minnich, Tim, Emalyn, and Nate O’Dell, Michael Fowlie, Katie, Jeremiah, Kiley, and Kiara Himschoot; his great-grandchildren Kayden Rogers, Devona Fowlie, and Sophia Goodman; siblings Patricia (Ray) Erlewine and Deanna Boston; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Eileen; brothers-in-law Dale Boston and Bob Sanders; his nephew, Denny Boston; and his niece Pam Kusserow.
