His family invites you to celebrate in his memory by wearing the colors of Notre Dame, Dodgers and Rams- his favorite teams.
Born on March 11th, 1941, in Dubuque, he was the son of Emmett D. and Dorothy (Menter) Pieters. The family moved to Marshalltown where he met the love of his life, Ilene Sanders. To this union, they were blessed with six children.
Larry was a proud union steward at Swift’s until retiring in 2000. He was proud of his service in the united States Marines and enjoyed watching the Dodgers, Rams and Notre Dame as well as westerns. He could tell you who starred in them, when they were made. He watched John Wayne movies for what seemed 1000 times just to see if the ending was different.
He was renowned for collecting pop cans to buy lottery tickets; then planning on how to spend the millions in winnings right down to the last penny. That was one of the many funny stories of Pete. If you knew him, you know a funny story- from stolen ice cream and watermelons to broken windows and teaching his children how to ride a bike. A few sledding experiences, shooting a revolver and catching the eye of Ilene while jumping parking meters. He wasn’t shy of his wild and adventurous side- even if it involved barbed wire bloody fishing trips.
Left to cherish his memory is Ilene, his loving wife: six children- Jayne Farfan, Lisa Pieters, Kris (Don) McClenathan, John (Missy) Pieters of Laurel, Debra (Rick) Mendez and Lori (Todd) Egleston of Marshalltown; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In death, Larry rejoined his parents, brothers Francis and Donald, granddaughter Allison Yanes, and fur babies Gino and Skeeter.
