Lawrence Larry Franklin Smith, 82, passed away at Southridge Nursing Home on Friday August 19th, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. A Memorial service will be held on Wednesday August 24th, 2016 at 6:00p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with a public visitation held from 5 until the service. Larry was born on December 16th, 1933 to the loving parents of James and Elisa (Miller) Smith in Marshalltown Iowa. Larry was educated through the Marshalltown School System and was a member of the graduating class of 1953. Larry attended Marshalltown Community College where he would get his Bachelor's Degree. Larry honorably served his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. He met Tana Wilkey, and they were married on July 16th, 1971. They raised there four children in Marshallton. Larry was a member of the Kiwanis and the commander of the Legion Of Guardsman while raising his family in Marshalltown. He was an active member for the A.A.U. basketball league and for seven years organize and operate the games and tournaments. When Larry found some free time he could often be found playing golf with his friends and family. Larry was known to frequent garage sales and antique malls always on the hunt for something new to him. The family can attest to Larrys love of the Iowa Hawkeyes as well. Left to cherish Larrys memory are his loving wife of 45 years Tana, his children Greg (Ana Lyn) Smith, Todd Smith (JoAnn Weuve), Kari Underhill (Steve Opperman), and Cory (Kim) Smith; grandchildren Amber, Breanna, Dylan, Austyn, Abby, Rylie, Tre, and Jaxon; great-grandchildren Kirra, Kendrick, and one on the way; sister Dorothy Anderson and sister-in-law Hisko Smith. Larry is preceded in death by his sisters Blanche and Claire, brothers Jim, Bud, and Roy, and his Parents James and Elisa.
