Larry H. Willson, 72, of the Iowa Veterans Home, died early Saturday, November 28, 2009.Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family. There will be no visitation. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Larry and his family. Ph 641-844-1234.Larry Homer Willson was born on February 15, 1937, in Haven, Iowa. He was the son of Richard and Mildred (Spurgeon) Willson. He attended school in the area of his birth. He served our country honorably in the United States Navy on the USS Rowe. On December 16, 1967, Larry married Danielle Quibel in Mason City, Iowa. They lived in Mason City, Fairfield, Austin, MN, and Newton. The couple later divorced. Larry worked as the manager of the HyVee Bakery in each of those towns. He moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in 1995 after suffering a stroke. He enjoyed playing the slot machines at Meskwaki, the Iowa Hawkeyes, doing ceramics while he lived at IVH, traveling while he served in the US Navy, and family gatherings.He will be missed by his two daughters, Lisa (Andy) Corr of West Branch, Iowa, and Nancy Willson of Iowa City; his granddaughter, Emily Corr; his siblings, Delores Kriegel of Hartwick, IA, Terry Willson of Marshalltown, Gary Willson of Houston, TX, Connie (Alan) Doran of Melbourne, IA, Debbie Fisher of Marshalltown, and Becky Hartman of Marshalltown; his brother-in-law, Philip Weiny of Albion; and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Betty Lou Weiny, his brother, Jerry Willson, and his brother-in-law, Bud Kriegel.Larrys family would like to thank the staff of Malloy 2 North and Heinz Hall at the Iowa Veterans Home, the staff at the VA Medical Center5 East in Iowa City, and Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at UIHCfor their compassionate care of Larry.
