LaVern DuToit, 85, of Sarasota, FL., former longtime Marshalltown resident, died Sunday, August 26th, at the Hospice House in Sarasota. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 19th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown with Pastor Bobby Shomo officiating. He will be laid to rest with combined full military honors provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Harry C. Harter Post #839 and American Legion Frank Lewis Glick Post #46 both of Marshalltown. A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow the interment rites and will be held at the funeral home. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. Tuesday with the family present. LaVern will be fondly remembered by many RV enthusiasts as owner and operator of Chuck and Verns Winnebago- one of the largest Winnebago dealerships in the United States selling campers and motorhomes but also retaining their auto service business. They operated for 15 years. Vern enjoyed many activities in his life, but most of all motorcycling with his wife of 65 years, Fran. In the early years of marriage, they made motorcycle trips to Colorado, California and in retirement years to the Great Smoky Mountains and Florida. He also enjoyed snowmobile trips to Wisconsin and Minnesota, fishing vacations to Minnesota and Canada, NASCAR Races and was a regular bowler on many leagues. Mr. DuToit also enjoyed stock-car racing in the Central Iowa area being in the role of owner and mechanic. He won many championships in Marshalltown, Boone and the Oskaloosa Speedways for many years. He also raced go-karts at the Gladbrook and Hickory Hill Raceways for many years. Vern was a member of the Moose Lodge in Marshalltown, American Legion, VFW, and Tama Eagles and was honored by the Marshalltown Bowling Association with a Lifetime Membership Award for over 50 years of membership. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife Fran, a son Steven both of Sarasota, grandchildren Eric DuToit of Hernando, Mississippi and Holly Stoneking of New Port Richey, FL., five great-grandchildren: Eden, Amaris, Milana, and Ivy DuToit and Brandon Stoneking. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Clarence and Berdell.
