LaVerne L. Rehder, 77, of Union, died Tuesday evening, May 8, at the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center. Memorial services for LaVerne will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 19, at the Union Community Church in Union, Iowa. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed in LaVernes name to his family. LaVerne Lyle Rehder was born August 12, 1934, to Harry and Lillian Rehder. He was the youngest of three boys. LaVerne grew up on a farm in OBrien County, Iowa, where he spend his school days and graduated from Calumet High School in 1953. After graduation he went to Minneapolis to work on the Railroad. He ran a depot for a year and then decided to join the military. He joined the Army in 1955 and spent two years in Korea during the Korean Conflict.LaVerne returned to Iowa and went to college at Buena Vista, then graduating from the University of South Dakota with a teaching certificate. He taught High School Math and Drivers Education at Spirit Lake, Iowa, Las Vegas, Nevada and Gruver, Iowa. Taking a break from teaching for five years, he moved his family to Outing, Minnesota, to run a resort, steak house and bait house on Roosevelt Lake. In 1980 he moved back to Union, Iowa, to finish his teaching career, teaching Math and Drivers Education at Union-Whitten High School. He spent his retirement days with his longtime friend Jean Marie Iverson.Left to cherish his memory are his children: Julie Weiner (James Wirth) of Lincoln, Nebraska, Thomas and Michele Rehder of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, his grandchildren: Elizabeth, Toby (Stasia Whisenpunk) and Morgan Weiner (EJ Weisser), Zack and Ben Rehder, his brother and sister-in-law Dalton and Florence Rehder of Paullina, Iowa, his stepson David and Lois Iverson of Union, Iowa, his two great-granddaughters Olivia and Sophia Whisenpunk and a great-grandson along with many nieces and nephews.He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Lillian Rehder, brother and sister-in-law Leonard and Mary Rehder and longtime friend Jean Marie Iverson.
