LaVonne L. Baker

LaVonne Baker, age 89, of Marshalltown, Iowa passed away on Friday, April 3, 2026 at the Iowa River Hospice Home, surrounded by her loving family.

LaVonne’s funeral service has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, 2026 starting at 11:00 A.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation one-hour prior, also at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family wishes to direct memorial contributions to the Iowa River Hospice Home. LaVonne Leola Buffington was born on November 26, 1936 in Albion, Iowa. She was the daughter of Vernon and Leona (Waldo) Buffington. LaVonne attended Albion High School and graduated with the class of 1955. On December 1, 1956, she was united in marriage to George A. Baker Jr. at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. LaVonne was a bank teller at Security Bank for the majority of her working career until her retirement. She was a master gardener and a proud member of The Federated Garden Clubs of Iowa. In her free time, LaVonne enjoyed playing golf, antiquing, ballroom dancing, and cruising in her Honda Goldwing and VW convertible. She also enjoyed taking walks around Marshalltown with her husband, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children: Greg Baker, Kirk (Sheila) Baker of Hornick, IA., and Lori (Craig) Weitzell of Marshalltown; her three grandchildren: Stephanie (Andy) Scott of Sloan, IA., Abbey (Brock) Benson of Glenwood, IA., and Brandon (Abby) Weitzell of Ottumwa, IA.; and her ten great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Vernon and Leona; her husband George; and her six siblings.
