Lavonne Pollard

LaVonne Pollard, 90, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on May 27, 2023 at the Willows of Marshalltown surrounded by her loving family.

Services for LaVonne will be held on Friday, June 2, 2023 beginning at 11:00 A.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A visitation will be held prior to services from 9:30 A.M. until service time. Memorials in LaVonne’s name may be directed to the Binford House in Marshalltown or to the family for a later designation. LaVonne was born August 31, 1932 on a farm just outside of Fort Dodge, Iowa to Robert and Linnie. She was the youngest of 10 children to their family. She attended school in Fort Dodge and graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1951. She attended a year of college in Fort Dodge following High School.

On February 14, 1953, LaVonne was united in marriage to John Pollard in San Luis Obispo, California while John was stationed for the service. Upon his departure from the service, LaVonne and John called Fort Dodge their home together until 1971. They raised five children together. Over the years, LaVonne worked for House of Calhoun Card Shop and then United Federal Savings and Loan in Marshalltown from where she retired in 1990.

In her free time, LaVonne remained active in many clubs and organizations. Over the years she was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marshalltown, volunteered for Meals on Wheels, took part in the Hospital Auxiliary, was a member and president of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, President of 20th Century, President of the TTT club. She was also part of the P.E.O., Entre Nous club, church circle, and the Woman’s Club in Fort Dodge. She loved to play in Bridge and 500 clubs, spend time with her family, entertain guests for get togethers and special occasions, and traveling to 46 of the 50 states and Europe, Mexico, and Canada. She enjoyed trips to Florida each year with John to get away for a month of the winter following their retirement. She also looked forward to Christmas Eve where she would attend church with her family then have everyone back to the house for a family meal and celebrations.

She is survived by her husband John Pollard; her children Peggy Niedermann, Pam Saigh, Paula (Bob) Nusbaum, Patrice (Sean) Ervin, and John (Amy) Pollard; her grandchildren, Jeff (Kate) Niedermann, Gary (Freddy) Niedermann, Doug (Allison) Niedermann, Lisa Saigh, AJ (Missi) Saigh, Adam (Sara) Nusbaum, Betsy Nusbaum, Molly (John) Person, Leah (Austin) Wagaman, JD Pollard, and Kailee Pollard; 11 great-grandchildren; her sister Opal Huson; and many of her 45 nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents Robert and Linnie; eight siblings; her sons-in-laws, Steve Niedermann and Marty Saigh; her mother and father-in-law; her 2 brothers-in-laws and one sister-in-law.
